Extending Live Action Through AI
Quench began with original live-action footage captured in Ghana and evolved into a hybrid production combining traditional filmmaking with generative AI.

Rather than replacing the original footage, the goal was to expand the world around it—creating new environments, transitions, character moments, lifestyle sequences, and cinematic B-roll that could integrate naturally with the existing material.

The project needed a creative system capable of maintaining the same visual identity while moving between very different production requirements—from character development and cinematic scenes to gameplay concepts and marketing assets.

The goal wasn't to replace production with AI. It was to use AI to make the production world bigger.

THE CHALLENGE

Making Two Production Worlds Feel Like One

The challenge wasn't simply generating additional imagery. Every new shot had to feel like it belonged in the same film.

That meant maintaining character likeness, wardrobe, hairstyles, accessories, skin tone, lighting, environments, camera language, and overall visual continuity across live-action and generated footage.

The standard was simple: if a shot looked impressive but didn't belong in the film, it didn't make the cut.

CREATIVE APPROACH

One Film. Two Production Worlds.

Original footage established the artists, performances, locations, wardrobe, and emotional foundation of the film. Generative AI expanded those ingredients into additional environments, cinematic transitions, automotive sequences, relationship moments, lifestyle imagery, and narrative B-roll.

The result was a hybrid workflow where traditional production established authenticity and AI expanded creative possibility.

CHARACTER CONSISTENCY

Keeping the Same Characters Across Generative Scenes

One of the most difficult parts of generative filmmaking is not creating a beautiful character—it is maintaining that character across different scenes, environments, poses, and camera angles.

Character reference systems were developed to control:

Identity • Facial Structure • Hair • Wardrobe • Jewelry • Skin Tone • Body Proportion

Generated footage was continuously compared against approved references before entering the edit.

A beautiful AI shot is useless if the audience no longer believes it's the same person.

Expanding the Visual World

Generative production allowed the film to move beyond the environments captured during principal photography and build a broader cinematic experience around the artists.

The expanded world included:

The challenge was ensuring these environments still felt connected to the visual identity and geography established by the original production.

The objective wasn't to generate random impressive clips.

Every AI sequence needed a specific editorial purpose.

Shots were developed using traditional filmmaking logic:

ITERATION + QUALITY CONTROL

The First Generation Wasn't the Final Generation

Generative production required continuous evaluation and refinement. Common problems included identity drift, changing wardrobe, misplaced jewelry, incorrect vehicles, inconsistent environments, unwanted background characters, and unusable motion.

The production process became:

REFERENCE → GENERATE → COMPARE → REJECT → REFINE → REGENERATE → EDIT

Quality came from art direction and iteration, not simply accepting the first visually impressive result.

LIVE ACTION + AI

Knowing Where AI Should—and Shouldn't—Be Used

Not every shot needed to be generated.

Original live-action footage remained strongest for authentic artist performances and moments where emotional connection mattered most.

AI was strongest when expanding environments, adding cinematic coverage, creating transitions, extending locations, and building moments that would otherwise require additional production. Use AI where it adds production value. Keep live action where authenticity matters more.
